Nell’ambito del
programma Erasmus plus 2015, ho l’opportunità di lavorare per due settimane dal
13 al 24 luglio 2015 nel Centre for Disability Law & Policy dell’Università
Nazionale d’Irlanda a Galway, capoluogo dell’omonima Contea a Ovest
dell’Irlanda, considerata la porta verso la penisola del Connemara. Mi trovo in questa città con una nutrita
popolazione studentesca da una settimana ed ho già stabilito molti contatti che
saranno sicuramente utili per collaborazioni future. Si tratta di un raro
esempio di Centro di ricerca Universitario che ha influenzato le politiche sui
diritti delle persone con disabilità a livello locale, nazionale ed
internazionale, attraendo finanziamenti
sia da enti privati che a livello
governativo, oltre che dall’Unione Europea e dalle Nazioni Unite. Inizialmente
nato nel 2001 come gruppo di ricerca, il Centro è stato formalizzato nel 2008
grazie al finanziamento iniziale dell’Atlantic Philanthropies, e fa parte del
nuovo Institute for Lifecourse and Society, che riunisce anche altri centri di
ricerca come l’UNESCO Child and Family Research Centre e l’Irish Centre for
Social Gerontology. Lo scopo del nuovo istituto multidisciplinare è di produrre
ricerca che possa influire sulle politiche riguardanti il benessere dei bambini
e dei giovani, delle persone con disabilità e degli anziani.

have the opportunity to work for two weeks from 13 th to 24 th July 2015 at Centre for Disability Law &
Policy National University Ireland
Galway, situated in the west of Ireland. It’s just a week I worked in Galways, a
city with a big student population, and I have established
contacts for future collaborations to
contribute to the spread of a new culture of disability, based on solidarity
and inclusion.The Centre is a
rare example of a university research centre that is having a positive impact
in policy and practice, it has influenced domestic,regional and international
policy in disability rights: its work has attracted a number of funders beyond
its initial core support from the Atlantic Philanthropies, ranging from other
philanthropies, the European Union and the United Nations. The Centre begun in
2008 and now it takes part of the new Lifecourse and Society at NUIG, that
joins other research centres at the university - UNESCO Child and Family Research Centre and
the Irish Centre for Social Gerontology. The purpose of the interdisciplinary
institute is to produce research that will make an impact on policies and
practices that affect the experiences and wellbeing of children and young
people, people with disabilities and older adults.
Galway è in questo
periodo un caleidoscopio di iniziative che hanno attirato la mia attenzione,
come la mostra “ The Changing Face of Human Rights” dal 12 al 24 luglio, che ha
riunito le immagini sui diritti umani commissionate dall’Unesco nel 1949 per
illustrare i principi della Dichiarazione Universale dei Diritti Umani, con quelle
contemporanee selezionate nel Concorso Internazionale Fotografico 2015
nell’ambito della Summer School internazionale sull’ Arte e i Diritti Umani,
organizzata dal Centre for Human Rights dal 9 al 11 luglio presso l’Università
a Galway. L’immagine vincitrice del Concorso
2015, di Maurice Gunning, riguarda una storia familiare in una periferia
della Città di Giurgiu, in Romania e ritrae un ragazzo sullo sfondo, in primo
piano una mano di bimbo su cui si posa a mangiare un uccellino. E’ una foto
parte di un servizio sulle famiglie che hanno scelto di tenere con sé i propri
figli, anche contro le indicazioni statali verso l’istituzionalizzazione,
ritenendo che possano avere una vita migliore con la cura e l’amore della
propria famiglia, anche se in condizioni di vulnerabilità.
In Galway in this
period there are a lot of events which focused my attention, such as the “ The
Changing Face of Human Rights” exhibition from 12th to 24th July. This
exhibition brings together images of human rights were commissioned by UNESCO in 1949 to
illustrate the recently adopted Universal Declaration of Human Right with the
winning images from an international photographic competitio as an
integral part of the Galway Interntional Summer School on the Arts and Human Rights that runs from 9th to 11th
July at NUIGalway. The winning image for 2015, by Maurice Gunning, represents a
child cared for by his family rather than in a state Institution and it’s a
part of much larger collection of photographs which reflect on the family
dynamic of each household, from the border town of Girgiu, Romania. The
parents and grandparents have chosen to keep their respective child within
their family unit, against the social norms of the State.
Dal 7 al 12 Luglio si è
tenuta inoltre la 27° Galway Film Fleadh, uno dei principali festival
cinematografici in Irlanda, che ha visto la presentazione di prime, interviste
pubbliche, il One Minute Film Festival e la celebrazione della musica da Film
con l’esibizione di un’orchestra sinfonica di 60 elementi. Mi ha colpito leggere come il Film di
apertura della Festa, titolato “ My Name is Emily”, sia stato scritto e diretto
attraverso il movimento oculare, supportato da un software, dell’autore e
regista Simon Fitzmaurice, completamente paralizzato a seguito di una malattia
neurodegenerativa che l’ha colpito dal 2008.
The 27th Galway Film Fleadh
took place from 7th to 12 th July, bringing an exciting mix of film premieres,
public interviews, including One Minute Film Festival and a celebration of the
Music of the Movies by a 60 piece
symphony orchestra. The opening film of the Fleadh was “My Name is Emily”, the
film was written and directed by Simon Fizmaurice, who was diagnosed with Motor
Neuron Disease in 2008. Now completely paralysed, Fizmaurice wrote the script
and directed the film trough eye movement and the use of iris recognition
software.
E’ tutt’ora
in corso, inoltre, dal 13 al 26 Luglio,
il Galway International Arts Festival, nell’ambito del quale si realizzano in
città rappresentazioni teatrali, concerti e mostre d’arte. Fra queste mi hanno
molto interessato e voglio segnalarvi le creazioni di un’artista australiana,
Patricia Piccinni, che ha ideato un’opera d’arte che ha visto la popolazione
seguire attonita il librarsi in aria di una “ Skywhale” una gigantesca e straordinaria balena volante
che ha evocato meraviglia, divertimento e interesse per una creatura degli
abissi che ha solcato il cielo di Galway.
Also running,
from 13th to 26th July, is the Galway International Arts Festival , that presents an international programme of theatre, spectacle,
dance, visual arts, music, literature & comedy involving hundreds of
artists and performers.The world-renowned Australian
artist Patricia Piccinini has produced one of the most talked about and
sensational outdoor artworks of recent years, the Skywhale, an extraordinary
creature that evoke joy, wonder, tenderness, and concern.
Molto
interessanti anche le opere della stessa autrice esposte in Galleria,
protagonisti i bambini e creature mostruose che non hanno problemi a
relazionarsi, anzi si affidano l’un l’altra senza timori, facendoci percepire
come l’innocenza dei cuori possa abbattere ogni barriera.
I was
very interested also in her “ Relativity” exhibition wihch presents sculptures
familiar yet fanstastical, a possibile future species from a strange new
world with quiet relationships without
fear trough mutants, who are half- human and half – beast, and babies.
